Choosing a custom tattoo or flash comes down to the idea you want to wear and how you want it made.
Custom tattoo or flash: the difference
Flash is a design an artist has already drawn. You choose it from the artist's available work, so you can see the design before you enquire. A custom tattoo starts with your idea and is drawn for you after a conversation with the artist.
If an artist has already drawn a piece you want to wear, ask about that flash. If your idea combines specific subjects or details, a custom drawing gives you a chance to discuss them with the artist first.
Choosing flash
Look through our flash designs and note the piece that catches your eye. Send an enquiry about that design, including where you'd like it and the approximate size you have in mind. Your artist can tell you if it's available and discuss the placement with you.
Each flash piece is usually tattooed once. Flash can usually be tattooed sooner than a custom piece because the design is already drawn, but the artist will confirm their availability with you. Don't assume a date is yours until the artist confirms it and you pay the deposit.
If you'd like a small change to the size or placement, ask the artist. Those adjustments are up to them, and they can explain what works for the drawing and the area you have chosen.
Choosing custom work
For a custom tattoo, tell us the subject, placement and rough size you're considering. Reference pictures are useful for showing the mood or details you like. They don't need to be finished tattoo designs; a clear explanation of what you want from each reference can help the conversation.
Custom work takes design time as well as discussion, so expect a wait. Your artist will talk through the idea with you and advise on the size and position. If the detail needs more space than the area allows, they can discuss the options before drawing.
Every artist decides which work they take on. Browse the artists and recent work to find a style that fits your idea, then mention that artist in your enquiry. If you're undecided, tell us what you have in mind.
How to decide
Choose flash if a finished design already feels right and you're happy to discuss it as the artist has drawn it. Choose custom if the subject or combination of details needs a fresh conversation and drawing.
For either route, bring an approximate size and the area of your body you have in mind. If a flash sheet caught your eye, point out the piece; if your idea is custom, explain the subject and the details you'd like included.
Deposits apply to flash and custom bookings. A confirmed date and paid deposit make the booking; the deposit forms part of the price. See our deposit terms for the details.
