Planning your first tattoo in Sheffield? Here's how we go from your idea to a confirmed date at Forty Two.
Your first tattoo, step by step
You don't need a finished drawing to get started. A subject, a few references and an idea of where you'd like it are enough for your first message to Forty Two. Your artist can talk through how that idea might work on the area you've chosen.
Find an artist whose work you like
Look through our artists and their recent work. Matt works in neo-traditional, neo-realism and colour; Jen's interests include abstract and geometric work. Anna works in blackwork, stipple and ornamental styles, Maddie enjoys bold animals and florals, and Laura works in black and grey, whimsy and botanicals.
You can also browse flash: designs an artist has already drawn. Every artist decides which work they take on, so send an enquiry even if you aren't sure who's the best fit. Mention which pieces caught your eye, especially if you have a preferred artist.
Send the useful details
Use the enquiry form to tell us your idea, the area of your body you have in mind and an approximate size. Reference pictures help show the subject, mood or level of detail you like. If a particular artist's work brought you to us, say so.
If you don't know the final measurements, give an approximate size and say if you want the tattoo to sit within a particular area. Mention any details you'd rather leave out, as well as the features you want included.
Talk through the design and book
Your artist will discuss the design, placement, size and price with you. Ask about anything you're unsure of before agreeing the design. If they suggest a different size or placement, they'll explain why it suits the piece.
An enquiry isn't a booking. Your date is booked once the artist confirms it and you pay the deposit; the deposit and cancellation terms explain what happens if plans change.
Fill in your form
You'll complete the consent form online before your appointment. Read the questions carefully and answer them accurately. If a question is unclear, contact your artist before submitting the form so you can complete it before the appointment.
Get ready for the day
Eat before you arrive, bring photo ID and wear clothes that give your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Choose something you can sit comfortably in and don't mind getting marked. If you're unsure what will work for the placement, ask your artist beforehand.
We tattoo adults aged 18 and over. Forty Two is a private, appointment-only studio on the second floor of Stag Works, near Bramall Lane.
Looking after it afterwards
Follow your artist's own instructions first; our tattoo aftercare guide covers the basics. These health points are general advice, so contact your artist, a pharmacist, your GP or NHS 111 if you're worried about healing or a reaction.
